October Shining Star: Westway Vets

Westway Vets are a veterinarian based in Consett. Westway Vets are fairly new to the Better Health at Work Award scheme, but have already made great progress in improving the health and wellbeing of their employees. Find out how they have been getting on!

Why did you decide to sign up to the BHAWA?

I wanted to create a happy and supportive working environment for my team. We did previously take part in an internal wellbeing support as our business established a wellbeing group in 2017 however the BHAWA has helped to structure the activities and information we provide as well as opening us up to more information we did not have before, for example cancer awareness and stop smoking campaigns. Ultimately, we wanted to ensure we were delivering a happy, supportive, inclusive and respectful working environment to create and maintain a happy place to work where our team members can thrive.

How do you find that the award benefits the organisation, and its employees?

The team enjoy the information that the award provides and enjoy taking part in activities that boost team moral and spirit as well as educating them. For example, for the 'Wear It Green' campaign we did a green buffet that the whole team got involved in, we took part in a celebration of pride month and did a community bake sale for mental health awareness.

Our step challenge encouraged the team to get active and created healthy competition between colleagues, and our team paddle board was a great physical activity getting the team outside and enjoying each other’s company. Additional benefits are the information we now provide on our notice boards such as stop smoking, benefits of healthy eating, prostate cancer awareness, breast cancer awareness and much more. This is all information we did not have access to before.

What kind of activities have you organised in line with the award so far?

Team swimming, desk-exercise, wear it green, breast cancer awareness, odd sock day, pancake day , mental health awareness week.
